Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Hurst. It's the second day of a partial shutdown for the Department of Homeland Security after Democrats demanded changes for immigration agents, including not wearing masks, not racially profiling people, and requiring them to identify themselves. This This in order to extend funding. But Congress

left without a deal, and it's now on a one-week recess. This after immigration agents

shot and killed two U.S. citizens in Minnesota last month. White House borders are Tom Holman

rejects the lawmakers' demands. I'll let the White House and members of Congress fight that out, but I think some of the

asks are just, I think they're unreasonable because there is no racial profile and there is

identifying marks.

But masks, you know, while they talk about maybe passing legislation, they make it illegal to docks at agents or something like that?

But the mask right now are for officer safety reasons.

Holman says more than 1,000 agents have left Minnesota and more will leave soon.

Democratic leaders say the party is ready to spend millions of dollars on a ballot measure in Virginia,

allowing Democrats to redraw the state's congressional map. And here is Ashley Lopez reports,

it's an effort to offset President Trump's plans to tilt maps in the GOP's favor for the midterms.

The Virginia Supreme Court ruled on Friday that Democrats can put a ballot

measure before voters that would pave the way for the party to draw as many as four more seats

that would favor them this year. In an interview with CNN, House Minority Leader Hakeem

Jeffrey said the party will fight hard to make sure that measure passes. We will spend tens of millions

of dollars to make sure that the Republicans do not successfully

manipulate voters in Virginia and that voters have all of the information necessary to make

a decision.

GOP leaders in Texas, North Carolina, and Missouri redrew their congressional maps at President Trump's urging last year. The special election in Virginia will be held in April. Ashley Lopez,
