Congressional leaders have come to an agreement on a spending plan to keep the federal government

funded for the rest of the fiscal year and avoid a shutdown.

As NPR's Joe Hernandez reports, now they need to write the bills and put them up for a vote in the House and the Senate.

The Budget Agreement sets top-line spending levels for defense at $883 billion in non-defense spending at $486 billion, and non-defense spending at $773 billion for the current

fiscal year.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson says the deal would secure money for veterans and cut funds to the IRS and COVID relief programs,

but he acknowledged that the cuts aren't as deep as some of his fellow Republicans would like,

and the deal is expected to anger some far right conservatives in the

House. President Biden said in a statement that the deal moves the country closer

to protecting national priorities and avoiding a government shutdown.

Lawmakers will now have to put together the legislation and vote on it

before some key programs run out of money on January 19th.
