Summary

Knees causing trouble again? This time, it is not gout, but an imposter known as pseudogout. Now what is pseudogout, you ask? Think of it as gout's mischievous twin. Like gout, it triggers sudden knee pain and inflammation, but instead of uric acid crystals, it is calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystals in your joints.

The symptoms are similar to gout, swelling, redness and pain, often in the knees, ankles or wrists. To diagnose pseudogout, you'll do some blood work to check for uric acid and X-rays and joint fluid analysis will help identify the culprit. Some treatments are rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medications.

Join Dr. Niket Sonpal as he spreads awareness about this lesser-known joint troublemaker.

This week, we're going to be talking about the clinical manifestations of calcium

0:43.6

pyrophosphate crystal deposition. In other words, pseudo-gout. So there's gout and

0:48.8

then there's pseudo-gout. I'm Dr. Nketson-Paul, your friendly

0:51.4

neighborhood internist and gastronautrologist, so let's kick off that music. I wonder if Justin Bieber

0:56.1

listens to this podcast. Maybe he can remix it for us. That's okay.

0:59.0

Play it anyway. Now when I mentioned pseudo-gout to people they think we're crazy in health care.

1:17.6

We've got one disease that's gout and it affected kings and now it's affecting regular people

1:21.8

and then we decided to name something

1:23.0

pseudo-gout. Well, the term isn't as commonly used anymore. The term

1:26.7

calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition is the appropriate term for the

1:30.6

disease. Calling it pseudo-gout is just a little bit easier.
