Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me Simon Calder and it's the very

0:06.7

last one of the week and a little bit different because I want to tell you about a new project

0:13.3

from the travel desk at the independent. It's called Travel Smart and it's on Independent TV

0:19.5

and if you just search Travel smart independent TV you should get

0:24.4

straight to the first edition it's a television program that is basically a magazine show about

0:32.7

travel so we take destinations we give you information hopefully we give you some inspiration, but you

0:39.8

will be the judge of that. And my excellent colleague, Helen Coffey, the travel editor, will also

0:47.5

talk to you about, well, the importance of sustainable travel and how it can be so rewarding. She is off to Antwerp and well there's a

0:58.3

newly replenished art museum there which looks just great and I cannot wait to get there.

1:04.3

Meanwhile deputy travel editor Lucy Thackeray has been to Puglia in Italy. It's the heel of Italy. Absolutely gorgeous, a really good

1:15.3

winter destination. I was there over Christmas and New Year a few years ago. And certainly it looks

1:21.8

as though there's even more happening in that beautiful part of Italy as well. Loads of great food, lots of history to look at,

1:31.2

interesting places to stay and some excellent beaches too. So what am I doing in all this?

1:38.0

Well, talking about more information, I guess, than inspiration, including the history of cabin baggage, which is a

1:47.4

tricky old problem. Of course, we've always had cabin baggage, but it wasn't really relevant

1:53.6

until 2006 when Flybee came along and said, oh, you want to check a bag and we're going to charge

2:00.0

you a couple of pounds to reflect the extra cost to us. So if you want to avoid that, just take cabin baggage. And that

2:06.7

was how it began. And now, of course, 20, 30, 40 pounds to check in a piece of baggage. Even if you

2:12.8

want to take more than a small backpack on some flights, you're going to be charged extra for that.

2:18.5

My view is just adhere to whatever the cabin baggage rules are.

2:24.2

If it's British Airways, you've got 46 kilograms.

2:27.6

Yes, two pieces of baggage, including one really quite chunky and sizable roll-along case,
