On this day in 1971, 10-year-old Carmen Colon, disappeared after visiting a drugstore in Rochester, New York.

She was found dead two days later, setting off a string of alliterative killings known as the alphabet murders,

and the perpetrator is still at large.

Carmen Cologne, the first victim in New York's so-called alphabet murders. Let's go back to the afternoon of November 16th, 1971, a little after 4.30 PM. 30 p.m. The pharmacist felt the cold fall air blow into his drugstore as the entry bell chimed. He looked up to snap at the

dawdling customer to close the door, but he relaxed when he saw it was young Carmen Cologne.

She had it hard enough.

It wasn't easy for a little girl to live with her grandparents, much less take care of them.

No, Carmen didn't need a grumpy pharmacist making her day any tougher.

He smiled as she came up to the counter, her head barely clearing the display case.

Regretfully, he informed her that her grandfather's prescription wasn't ready yet.

Carmen's face fell.
