From the Nazi Party of the 1930s to today's brothers of Italy, the family has long been

the sustaining myth of fascism.

The family is a community in which everyone has their god ordained rank, where some are

born to lead and others to serve, a useful fantasy when it comes to creating a factory

an army or a colony.

It is where racial supremacists are upheld, think of the anti-missedination laws in

Jim Crow America or apartheid South Africa.

Yet despite knowing this, many on the left will defend the family to their dying breath,

or at least they won't spend much time critiquing it.

If we as leftists can just about imagine a world without prisons, a world without family

seems unthinkable.

What are you suggesting that I murder my grandma, abolish my children?

There are good reasons for this defensiveness.

As well as being the site where whiteness is reproduced, the family has also provided

marginalized people with a haven from oppressive social forces.

Hence, why family separation plays such a key role in global border regimes.

Still, many have begun once again to question whether it's possible to create a different

kind of world out of family units.
