Few things terrify me more than people who live together but don't share food.

Maybe it's just the Jewish mother and me, but I can't help but feel that the image

of housemates marching up to the microwave one by one to reheat their sad, spag bowls

is a symptom of something much more serious.

To the nuclear family, this kind of bizarre individualism is anathema.

But as soon as we co-habit with people we're not blood related to, it suddenly, each man

for himself, we talk a lot on the left about the privatisation of the NHS.

But what about the privatisation of care within the nuclear family?

We criticise the hostile environment, but what about the border policing that privileges

family over friends?

We bimmon the housing crisis, but what about the fact that one of the only ways to live

affordably in London is by moving in with your partner?

We talk about bosses and billionaires, but what about the abusive boyfriends that capitalism

means we can't escape, and whose existence means we can't escape capitalism?

It's one thing identifying these problems with the nuclear family, but few people are

brave enough to offer alternatives to it.
