What's going on everyone? Welcome back to the Epic Gardening Podcast. We are joined

again by Darrell Byers. He's the author of the upcoming book, The New

Gardeners Handbook, which I would highly recommend you take a look at, potentially pre-order.

It's also a Garden instructor at the New York Botanical Garden.

And so yesterday we talked about really the first part of

Darryl's book as well as a really great foundational piece of

thinking as far as gardening goes and it's balancing the roots in the shoots

thinking of the plant as a whole organism.

And so to drill a little bit further into that, Darryl, today we're kind of talking about,

okay, we understand that the roots exist now as a new gardener, right?

And so how do we actually take care of those appropriately?

Yes, so this is this topic the soil topic is really

it's it's what I consider probably one of the most important things that a new gardener is going to learn about gardening is when they discover how the soil works and how the roots of the plants and the soil and things that the gardener does all

interact to create that happy healthy plant that you really, that everybody wants to grow.

Lots of times people look at a plant that's having some trouble, it's struggling,

there's some sort of, seems like there's some sort of problem with it and they automatically assume

that it's like, oh, is there a bug eating the leaf or is there something on the top?

Is there something wrong with the shoots?

When in the majority of cases, it's, there's something going on with the roots.

In other words, soil doesn't have the proper fertility measures.

Maybe it's too wet, maybe it's too dry, maybe it's, you know, it's like there's something happening
