Summary

Romans 4:1-3 - What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”

Romans 2:12-16 - For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

Welcome back my friends. It is time for the morning mindset. This is our opportunity to

0:09.3

get our minds aligned with the truth of God and I'm excited today because we get to start

0:14.8

Romans chapter 4. This is where we are in our ongoing walk through the book of

0:19.8

Romans and today we're going to hear a little bit of a biblical history lesson. Meaning

0:26.2

we're going to go back and look at what some of the Old Testament characters

0:32.1

and personages learned about faith.

0:35.0

And I always find this quite instructive to look back in the Old Testament and see

0:40.0

how God worked in people's lives back then and then translate those lessons into the modern day.

0:46.1

And that is exactly what the writer of Romans, the Apostle Paul, does for us in this passage.

0:51.9

And the reason he does is very important. He has been making the

0:55.8

case for justification, which is the act of being made right with God. he's making the case that justification comes only through

1:06.5

faith. And that means believing that it comes about through what God has done for us,

1:13.2

rather than us having to work for it

1:16.1

and figuring out some way to earn it.

1:18.8

And chapter four of Romans,

1:20.8

he goes back to the Old Testament to show that even in the Old Testament days, this was the case.

1:28.3

Let's read Romans chapter 4, verses 1 through 3.

1:31.8

He says, what then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather,

1:37.8

according to the flesh? For if Abraham is justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.

1:46.6

For what does the scripture say?

1:49.5

And now he's quoting the scripture, Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.

1:57.0

Now that's all we're going to look at today, because that is a powerful concept. Now remember the context here.
