Stuart Sutcliffe - Part One
Stuart Sutcliffe was the star pupil at the Liverpool College of Art, and also John Lennon’s flatmate.
By becoming a Beatle, he demonstrated that the band was a state of mind.
To be a Beatle was to be something…other. Then they got the call up for Hamburg.
Live on tape from Dublin, it’s Nothing Is Real.

0:24.5 | And we're live on tape from Dublin. |
0:28.8 | We have often touched upon the conversation of who is the true fifth beetle. |

0:39.6 | And that is the person we are going to be talking about today, Mr. Stuart Sutcliffe, who is a fascinating figure who casts a long shadow over everything we know about the Beatles through to this day and the big question of the what |
0:45.8 | if and the what could have been. So he was an official member of the band there for a short time. |
0:51.2 | I like the fact that he was the only member of the band that left voluntarily |
0:54.6 | and on good terms. He's the only member who left who would have been welcomed back, is my theory. |
1:00.1 | I think that's probably correct. He would have been welcomed back by most of the band. |
1:04.8 | Well, we shall get to that exciting point. And I'm sure, obviously, everybody listening to us |
1:10.3 | knows that, you know, the overall |
1:12.3 | arc of Stewart's story, that he was a member of the band. He left the band and he passed |
1:17.8 | away in Hamburg in 1962. But it is part of the Beatles, you know, mythos, his existence. |
1:27.4 | We don't really, he's almost like, |
1:29.1 | I think of like the singer Nick Drake. He's one of these characters who we don't really have |
1:33.0 | any permanent reminders exactly of what he was like. He's very spectral. Yes, he appears in |
1:39.9 | photographs. You know, he is photographed a lot because of Astrid Kiersher and his connection there. |
1:47.4 | There are no sound recordings of Stuart Sucliff. So we don't know what he sounded like. We don't know, |
1:53.3 | you know, he's sighing with the Beatles. Nothing is recorded. And yeah, you look at him in those photographs and he is this spectral presence. |
