The ultimate successor failure of the House Select Committee to investigate the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol, that's the official name, could come down to time.

Will the committee have enough time to complete a full investigation, or will House Republicans

aided by the committee's own semi-casual pace run out the clock?

So let's do some calendar math.

The capital attack happened, of course, on January 6, 2021. The current Congress,

the 117, sits until January 3rd, 2023, when the 118th Congress will be sworn in based on the

results of the November 2022 midterm elections. We don't know yet who will control the House

in 2023, of course, but recent history tells us that first-term presidents tend to lose ground in their first midterm elections.

Donald Trump lost 40 House Republican seats and the majority back in 2018.
