Elie Honig is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney and co-chief of the organized crime unit at the Southern District of New York, where he prosecuted more than 100 mobsters, including members of La Cosa Nostra, and the Gambino and Genovese crime families. He went on to serve as Director of the Department of Law and Public Safety at New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice. So two years ago or so were big shot heavy hitters at DOJ and I was going to be down in D.C. for a bit.

And so we planned to meet for coffee. And they said, well, why don't you come into Maine Justice, the big headquarters building? We'll just have coffee in one of our offices. And I thought, huh, okay, a little bit unusual. I mean, I'd been pretty critical of Garland

up to that point. And I don't know, I thought we would just go to the corner bakery or something.

So I'm in there with them. And after a while, Merrick Garland walks in. He's the attorney general at the time. And I was thinking, holy shit, I don't curse a lot,

but that's exactly what was in my head. I stood up. I was not dressed properly. I mean, I was

wearing appropriate clothes for an adult, but I wasn't in a full suit and tie like I should have been.
