Summary

Scott Ott brings us some astonishing news: it turns out that if you break an apple down into its components and consume all of them, it is not as healthy for you as ACTUALLY EATING THE APPLE. Turns out the world is not only more complex than we imagine... it's more complex than we CAN imagine. Now how do we get the Big Brains in Science, Politics and Economics to understand something so simple and obvious? Well, they used to say an apple a day can keep the doctor away. Do you think it could do the same

0:04.5

for the politicians and economists? I'm Scott Ott with Bill Whittle and Stephen Green, and this

0:08.8

episode of Right Angles brought to you by the members at Bill Whittle.com. And gentlemen, I happen to be

0:13.4

listening to an audible book called Whole, and it's mostly about the scientific benefits of a whole food plant-based diet.

0:23.0

But as my mind tends to do, while I'm listening to it and walking around my neighborhood for

0:28.8

exercise, I begin to have other thoughts.

And just this morning, as we record this, it occurred to me that the government suffers from the same malady that many people

0:41.8

and scientists and doctors do when it comes to health. The government has the same problem

0:49.1

with the economy. And Steve Green, this is what I mean. The author of this book said that there has been a lot of focus on trying to find carcinogens and then basically ban the carcinogens in the scientific community.

1:02.6

There's also been a lot of focus on trying to find sort of, for one of a better term, the super vitamin.

1:09.3

And then, you know, if the government could,

1:11.8

I'm sure they would mandate the super vitamin while banning the carcinogens. But what they found

1:17.8

over and over through the years is that the human body and, frankly, most of the foods we eat

1:25.7

are redolent of irreducible complexity.

1:31.3

In other words, when they do a test on an apple, they find that an apple has some positive benefits and antioxidants and stuff like that that are good for the human body.

1:41.3

But by giving one of those ingredients to a human in much higher doses

1:46.8

than you would find with an apple, you don't get nearly the effect that you would get if you

1:51.4

simply ate an apple. Because essentially, the apple is super complex. And the antioxidant

1:59.1

ingredients mixed with other ingredients that are inside that apple,

2:02.0

and they all work together in harmony to help the human body in ways that you can't get

2:06.4

by isolating one of those nutrients and then turning it into a pill. And Steve, it just hit me

2:13.4

like lightning this morning while I was out on my walk, I was like, oh my goodness, that's what
