Summary

Though his wife and RA continue to plead for him to stop, Jonah can’t be deterred from following the self-destructive path of the weekly Ruminant, especially with a legion of overly eager wedding guests on his side. Today’s episode features a predictably peculiar melange of topics, among them the hideous second GOP debate, the misguided fondness for autocrats present on parts of the right, and the validity of the Biden impeachment inquiry. Remnant devotees should stick around until the end for further details on The Skiff, an exciting new podcast feature coming to The Dispatch that’s sure to consume far too much of your life. Show Notes: - The Dispatch Podcast on the second GOP debate - Philip Bump: “The Rise of ‘Chinese Communist Party’ as a Pejorative” - Jonah: “When the Stupid Futility Is the Point” - Do the facts speak for themselves? Well, ladies and gentlemen, now, can I please have your attention?

0:21.2

Greetings, dear listeners. This is Jonah Goldberg, host of the Remnant Podcasts, brought to you by the Dispatch and Dispatch Media.

0:33.2

I'm a little amped up this morning just because I got so much stuff to do and it's the first time I've been doing it.

0:40.2

I've done the solo since I got home from my epic adventure and which we can talk about more later, I guess.

0:49.2

So where to begin? I should just say, you know, my sympathies and condolences to Diane Feinstein and her to Diane Feinstein's family and staff and friends.

1:00.2

She passed away about 15, 20 minutes ago, or at least the news came out that she passed away.

1:05.2

She was an impressive woman who lived an impressive life.

1:09.2

I'm not sure she'll be the considered the giant of the Senate, the way some people are saying, at least on MSNBCR right now.

1:16.2

But she was a more sensible Democrat than a lot of Democrats. She lived a very impressive life.

1:22.2

I just go from the school that I kind of react badly when lots of the sort of the chattering classes get incredibly weepy and start talking about it being sort of tragic that very accomplished impressive people who lived very full and accomplished lives.

1:42.2

Pass away in their 90s. Yeah, for family and friends, it's a really big deal and I don't want to diminish that at all.

1:53.2

But that is not a tragic life that is a life fulfilled and it's something worthy more of celebrating than of some of the performative gnashing of teeth and rending a cloth that at least I was just watching a few minutes ago.

2:07.2

But I don't want to dwell on that because it sounds dispeptic and whatnot.

2:10.2

And so resting piece and golances and it should be very interesting politics that come out of this to see what Gavin Newsom does.

2:19.2

But we can talk about that another time.

2:22.2

What else to talk about?

2:24.2

The debate this week. It was not great, Bob.

2:29.2

We talked about this a good deal on the dispatch podcast with Yuval. It was just me, Steve and Yuval, which was fun. I do not want to start hosting the dispatch podcast more.

2:40.2

It just sort of fell to me because Steve was wildly sleep deprived. Sarah is still on maternity leave and Mike Warren is on vacation.

2:47.2

It may seem strange that I'm so averse to guest hosting given that I do this podcast, but I know there's just something about it. I know maybe it's the strange expectation of professionalism that comes with doing a different podcast that is totally antithetical to the proper functioning of this podcast.

3:07.2

Oh, I didn't tell you. Maybe I didn't tell you. I don't know. It was in Iowa last weekend.

3:13.2

Went to Declan Garvey, our executive editors, really just just lovely wedding. And in almost every regard, the setting was great.
