Judges chapter 7, verse 2.

The Lord said to Gideon, the people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand,

lest Israel boast over me, saying my own hand has saved me.

Oh, what a good verse, God telling Gideon, I'm going to make sure

that when you lead my people in the land to take the Midianites, it will be clear. It was not because of

their hand, your hand, that you were saved, that you won. It will be clear that it's because of my hand.

And the reality is this is true in all of our lives.

This is at the core of our salvation.

We're saved by grace through faith.

Ephesians 2, this is not our own doing.

It is the gift of God.

None of us can look at our salvation and say, I did that. God alone did that. So then think

about the tendency we have to say when it comes to all kinds of things in our lives, I did this or I did

that. I think about talking not long ago with a group of professional athletes who are obviously elite in their trade, who work really hard to do that. And at one point I said, you might be tempted to think, I've done this. Like, I work hard. I get up every morning. I do this or that. I go through this workout regime. I eat this way. I discipline my body that way. And I said, you have no doubt you do all these things.

At the same time, who is it that gives you the breath to wake up in the morning in the first place?

Who is it that gives you the strength to walk, much less work out?

Who is it that gave you the skill to practice hour after hour with?

All of that comes from the hand of God.

And that's not just for professional elite athletes. This is for every single one of us. There is nothing good in us apart from God's

grace to us. And when we realize this, we realize, well, one, we are living testimonies of his grace,

and we have grace to celebrate every single day, no matter how hard
