Hi everyone is 4 o'clock in the east for those of us who reside in the

pro-democracy coalition in American politics today is set to be another clarifying moment in a campaign

that has seen one of those after another after another in which the stakes for

our democracy continue to rise. Tonight the four times indicted twice impeached convicted a

34 felony's ex president will accept the nomination for the third time from

the Republican Party. It caps off a convention that reveals a party with not a

single crack in the facade of full support for Donald Trump. The fact that Trump is

once again the nominee proves that when Donald Trump so memorably said at the

RNC in Cleveland eight years ago, quote I alone can fix it, he managed to

convince nearly the entire Republican Party of that and those those he did not convince, those who still

cling to those pesky traditions of democracy,

folks like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger

find themselves in exile outside of the Republican tent and in the pro-democracy coalition.

What is said to happen tonight though seemed unthinkable even to some of the Republicans

in the room by the end of Donald Trump's first term in the wake of that violent insurrection that led to the deaths of two police officers, more than a hundred others injured, our country's image around the world is a stable democracy thrown into doubt

perhaps forever. Here's how some of the leaders of the 2020 Republican Party

reacted then.
