When I think about Wilmington, I immediately envision the blue waters of Carolina

and Wright'sville Beach.

I can smell the saltwater and I can see the children playing in the sand.

It's hard to imagine that Wilmington was the site of one of the deadliest massacres in North Carolina history.

I've lived in North Carolina for the last 18 years.

I've lived near Charlotte. I went to school in Greensboro.

I now live in Durham and on several occasions, I've been to Wilmington.

And one thing you will instantly notice when you go to Wilmington, North Carolina is that it is really, really white, noticeably.

But it wasn't always like that.

After the Civil War ended in 1865, lines were drawn in the dirt.

And this line represented the divide between the political parties, Democrat and Republican.

And this divide can best be illustrated by the political landscape in late 19th century women to North Carolina.

In July of 1865 in New Burr, North Carolina, 90 miles up the coast from Wilmington, former enslaved black people held a massive meeting in New Burr.
