Like most kids, Preston imagined his first trip in the back of an ambulance to be the result of falling out of a tree and breaking something, not to watch his grandpa take his last breaths.

Preston came his grandpa's weak voice. They barely broke through the screeching

sirens as they sped into the night. Preston pulled his gaze from the stars above

and looked down at his Grandpa who lay on a stretcher.

Just minutes ago they were laughing around a campfire, telling jokes and singing songs.

But their laughter turned to panic when his grandpa grabbed his arm and

pain and dropped to his knees.

Get help, his grandpa'd managed to say.

Preston ran as hard as he could through the dense forest trying to find someone, anyone.

By the time he found help at a gas station in the middle of nowhere, he had run nearly three miles.

It took time, too much time for the ambulance to get to his

grandpa.
