Once upon a time there was a girl named Nora, and Nora lived in a house in the woods.

One December evening, the snow was falling softly in the woods behind Nora's house,

covering everything in a blanket of white.

And Nora loved taking walks in the fresh snow when the world felt peaceful and new.

She pulled her woolen hat down over her ears and adjusted her bright red scarf as she crunched through the snow,

following the path she knew by heart.

And that's when she heard it.

There was a small, trembling sound coming from behind a cluster of snow-covered pine trees.

Nora called out softly, stepping carefully toward the sound.

Is someone there?

The whimpering sound grew louder as she got closer,

and then pushing aside a low-hanging branch,

Nora gasped when she saw what the sound was coming from. There tangled in a thorny bush was a

baby deer. It was smaller than any other deer she had ever seen with fuzzy brown fur in the biggest

eyes she had ever seen. Oh, you poor thing, Nora whispered as she knelt down, and the baby deer

lifted its head. You must be freezing, she said. You need to come with me as she took off her

coat and wrapped it around the tiny deer. But as Nora untangled him, she could hear the sound

of howling wolves off in the distance.

Nora froze.

Those wolves must have caught the baby deer's scent, and they were closing in as the sound
