Summary

Chris interviews Natalie Madden of Defenders of Wildlife on how noise pollution impacts birds. Drawing on a meta-analysis of 160 studies, she highlights strong negative effects on reproduction, along with changes in behavior, communication, and stress physiology. The episode explores major noise sources, links to broader bird declines, and practical ways at both individual and policy-level to reduce noise and support conservation. Grownups, if there's a child in your life who is interested in, curious about, or fascinated by people and places from history, then my podcast, the past and the curious, might just be a hit in your home.

First, welcome Natalie to the All Creatures Podcast.

1:21.3

Thanks. Thanks for having me excited to be here.

1:24.5

Yes, this came across my email and I jumped right on it because today we're going to talk a little bit about impacts on bird and bird populations around the world and specifically noise pollution.

1:38.1

This is a new area that I hadn't really considered over the nine years that we've been doing this. We talk a lot

1:46.3

about the climate. We talk a lot about other types of pollution, like plastics and things in the

1:52.2

oceans or polluting our freshwater systems. Noise pollution. What got you interested in that

1:59.5

for a topic in your research? Yeah, I think you're not

2:03.9

alone in sort of not focusing on noise as a pollution, but I think from our research, I would

2:13.3

definitely define it in that way. And that's sort of part of the reason that we wanted to

2:19.2

research it a little bit more. I think we all kind of recognize in ourselves, sort of the

2:25.7

impacts of noise, how it can cause stress on ourselves, and, you know, just kind of be a distraction

2:32.9

for us. And with this research, we really wanted to see if there

2:40.9

were bigger impacts of noise, like if it was affecting the behavior and the fitness of, especially

2:49.9

birds, because as we know, you know, they rely a lot on acoustic

2:54.5

information for lots of different aspects of their ecology. So, yeah, I think with this research,

3:03.7

what we really wanted to entangle is, you know, is noise sort of just an annoyance?
