It was Harold's turn to go and look for a pinky, while the rest of them straightened up for the

night's gathering.

They had agreed to confine their activities to the dusty neglected storage room in the hospital's Old North Wing.

For starters, it was where they lived,

in a part of the building untouched by renovation.

The nurses never needed things from that room after hours.

Nurses and white coats were special kinds of pinkies. They ran the hospital and were best not interfered with.

There was one pinky that came every few nights to mop the hallway outside.

Sometimes it crept into the storage room to smoke and spend time with picture magazines.

It thought nothing of exposing itself in full view of Harold and the others where they slouched against the wall,

watching its excitement with silent interest.

Between its bristly thighs the pinky was fitted with valves and hangings they did not have.

They had talked about capturing the interloper, keeping it permanently in the room, so there would be no need to find a new pinky for every gathering.

But they shared a vague notion that pinkies needed special things to keep them alive and quiet, which Harold and the others did not quite grasp. Surely its airways would be corroded with smoke anyway, which made it not so useful.

Mavis, who was clever, had judged it less trouble to keep the old system in place.

The others agreed, even if Mavis was not the wisest, she was the best

at speaking.
