Summary

Have you ever considered why the Bible asks us to fear the Lord? Scripture helps us understand who God really is. He is a God who saves and defeats His enemies. He is compassionate and yet also a consuming fire. He is a holy, perfect, and just God. He is the one we sin against, and because of His greatness, our well-deserved punishment is severe. Yet our infinite, loving God offers us grace through the blood of Jesus: an infinite gift we could never repay. For more information, visit lakepointe.church/dailydrive

And yesterday we read Deuteronomy chapter 14 verse 4 that says the following.

It says this, serve only the Lord your God and fear only him, obey his commands,

0:58.1

listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. And so we're starting with this description of what

1:04.7

it means to fear the Lord. According to Deuteronomy, one way to explain it is that to fear God

1:09.9

is to obey his commands, to listen to

1:13.5

his voice, and to hold fast to him. Now, why would God ask us to fear him? Why doesn't the Bible just

1:21.8

say, hey, you know what? Love God because he's good. Or love God because he's faithful. Or something that just might sound

1:30.7

just a little bit more encouraging for our 24 modern American cultural sensitivities. Let me try to

1:38.4

explain that. Here's why. Because the Bible is not a fortune cookie hallmarky, inspirational book that's just trying to make us feel good about ourselves.

1:50.6

The Bible is actually the inspired word of the living God who tells us exactly who God actually is, not who we want him to be or who we would like him to be, but who he actually is.

2:05.1

And one thing that the Bible makes clear is that, yes, God is love. But the Bible makes it clear

2:12.0

that God is also just. Yes, God is a God who saves, but he's also a God who defeats his enemies.
