With the air of the printing press, the new tech of the day, copies of his document go viral and he becomes a major medieval influencer.

Emboldened, he circulates pamphlets with even more challenging ideas and the insults start to fly.

Pope Leo the 10th calls him a drunken German and Martin Luther replies that the Pope is no better than any other stinking sinner.
