Summary

In this episode we discuss the spiritualism movement that lit up the country (but especially northwest and central New York) between 1840 and the 1920's, including the Fox sisters, who were fraudulent mediums who made lots of money cheating bereaved war widows and moms. Spiritualism and Ouija boards rely upon communing with spirits of the dead for advice and counsel. 0:33.0	This episode is titled The Mysterious Origin of the Weegee Board, and this is Houdini Part 2.
0:39.0	In Part 1 we gave the facts and some of the stories that surround the life of Harry Houdini,
0:44.0	which led us to his personal war to expose all mediums as frauds, a war which continued long
0:49.0	after his death.
0:50.0	There's no doubt that Houdini left behind a huge legacy.
0:53.0	He brought magic out of the carnival and vaulted it into the world of legitimate showmanship,
0:58.0	and one of the ways he did this was to publicly pursue the frauds in his business.
1:02.0	By the 1920s, the use of mediums, or people who said they could contact a deceased person
1:08.0	and relay messages from that person to you, as you sat at a round table in a candlelit room
1:13.0	was at a record high.
1:15.0	The belief that spirits exist apart from matter was and is called spiritualism,
1:20.0	and to many it had become not only an interest, but a religion.
1:24.0	Spiritualists see the afterlife or the spirit world not as a static place,
1:29.0	but as one in which spirits continue to evolve.
1:32.0	These two beliefs that contact with spirits is possible,
1:36.0	and that spirits are more advanced than humans, lead spiritualists to a third belief,
1:41.0	that spirits are capable of providing useful knowledge about moral and ethical issues,
1:46.0	as well as about the nature of God.
1:48.0	Some spiritualists will speak of a concept which they refer to as spirit guides,
