| 0:23.4 | We talk about food fairly often but this was for like a specific project. |
| 0:26.9 | And I briefly thought about doing a history of the tomato because there's just so much |
| 0:32.6 | stuff there that really fascinates me. |
| 0:34.8 | Like, for example, tomatoes are such a key part of so much Italian cuisine but they |
| 0:41.0 | are not even native to the same continent as Italy. |
| 0:45.6 | There's that whole thing where people in parts of the world used to think tomatoes are |
| 0:49.0 | poisonous and they are in the nightshade family, which does include some really toxic plants |
| 0:55.7 | and people can have allergies and intolerances and things like that. |
| 0:59.5 | But also tomatoes are just acidic enough to leech the lead out of dishes and utensils. |
| 1:05.7 | So in the era when people were eating off of lead a lot, they really might have been |
| 1:09.9 | helping to poison people. |
| 1:12.7 | We've also done histories of specific foods before some of those episodes are ones that |
| 1:18.1 | I researched and wrote. |
| 1:19.3 | So I know that can be done. |
| 1:20.7 | But as I looked at this, it just increasingly seemed maybe not workable for tomatoes. |
| 1:27.3 | You could do any one of those nodules of the tomato story and its own story. |
| 1:32.8 | It would be its own thing. |
