When we decide to be a country founded on both slavery and freedom, we justify that by dehumanizing black people. And by saying that they're not like other human beings. Therefore, when we brutalize them, when we rape them, when we kill them, we exploit their bodies for profit. We don't really have to feel that bad about it because they don't feel pain like us because they don't love like us. So when I sell this mother's child, she doesn't feel what I feel. She feels

like what a dog would feel with the puppy being gone. She'll forget about her child the next day,

which is literally what they would tell these women, right? To create a system like that,

and then at emancipation, say, actually, you're fully human just like the rest of us. You cannot.
