Retro Hour podcast episode number 83, your weekly dose of retro gaming and technology news with me, Dan Wood.

And me, Ravi Abbott. Now, welcome along to this week's show. If you are new to the Retro Hour podcast, we always like to welcome a new listeners. Oh, yeah, totally. And kind of explain what we're about as well. And also people at listen every week. You know, we appreciate you guys massively as well. But obviously, this show, we come out every single Friday. And the way this works is, Ravi and I are going to go through the top stories that are making the headlines in the world of retro. And believe it or not, there are still stories every week that are new in the world of retro gaming. It's crazy, there's actually more stories. You know, we were struggling for news when we first started this. Now we're like, oh, we've got to pick and choose. Because I remember we did a TV interview last year, didn't we, with Knott's TV, like a local

TV channel here. And the journalist, he didn't know a lot about, like, retro video games. And, you know, we explain that that we do, you know, news stories. Yeah, like, new consoles coming out and stuff. He was like, what, news in retro?

How does that work?

But there's loads of goings on, stuff we've got to talk about in just a minute.

And then, in the second half of the show, we welcome on a special guest.

Now, I will say on this show, we're never afraid of a bit of controversy, are we?

No, not at all. And the game that we're going to be talking about today in exploring

was actually one of the most controversial video games in history. So controversial, it actually started kind of video game censorship. Yeah. Which is pretty crazy. And it was debated in like, you know, the House of Commons and stuff. And in America, it was, you know, the courts were talking about it. The state senate, yes. Yeah, it was like, I think it was one of the games. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this was a game in America that brought in age rating, or it was definitely one of them, wasn't it? Yeah, yeah, it was. The entertainment software ratings board was created. Now, in hindsight, looking at the game, it's not really that graphic or anything, really, is it? No, and this game we're talking about, it's called Night Trap, and you may remember it.

It was kind of like a cheesy slumber party that was invaded by monsters with grappling hooks.

Now, we talked about it before. It was, you know, essentially no more gory and graphic than a teen slasher movie.

No, but they put it in the same rating as Mortal Kombat. You know, this was like the kind of age of hysteria with video games. But obviously it was one of the first games that took advantage of full motion video on consoles. You know, it was like a mega CD title. That's the platform that it was created on. And now 25 years later, the game's actually getting re-released. Yeah, this is so cool, and we're going to talk about the whole history of it and kind of the new release and the new features that they've added in because they've actually found good quality versions of the footage. So if you remember those mega-CD kind of images, there were these tiny little windows. Like a postage stamp, wasn't it? Or really.

But this is going to be full screen, you know, really nice quality.

What amazes me as well, a game that came out and really wasn't all that good.
