Night marchers, known as huaka’i pō in the Hawaiian language, are death-dealing ghosts. For the old Hawaiians, an immortal spirit could take many forms and habitations. The Uhani spirit of a departed one might make its presence known in the shape of a cloud, felt in the rush of cold wind, seen in the flight of a bird, heard in a dog's howl, or owls cry. It might inhabit a rock permeating with the strange power of mana.
