0:09.6	If God is dead, if we can no longer believe in him with that same sincere, naive faith of previous generations, where do you go forward from there?
0:16.7	Because according to Friedrich Nietzsche, this is not good news. Nietzsche calls it a catastrophe.
0:21.9	Without God, the universe is a picture of chaos.
0:25.0	In our world, suffering predominates.
0:27.0	With God, we at least had the hope that the suffering of this world led to an eternity of joy in the next world.
0:32.0	But with the death of God, that option is gone.

0:38.0	The most common answer is to reject both desire and suffering.
0:43.0	Existence is a bad deal, the thinking goes, so refuse to play the game.
0:46.3	Try to achieve some sort of nirvana.
0:48.3	No suffering, no desire, no self, just release.
0:52.7	That is the answer given by the Stoics, the Buddhists, and Arthur Schopenhauer.
0:58.4	But Nietzsche gave a different answer. Quote, God is dead, God remains dead, and we have killed him.
1:04.0	How can we console ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? The holiest and the mightiest thing
1:08.7	the world has ever possessed has bled to death under our knives.
1:12.3	Who will wipe this blood from us?
1:14.1	With what water could we clean ourselves?
1:16.5	Is the magnitude of this deed not too great for us?
1:19.5	And then the next sentence here is the key.
1:21.5	Here is Nietzsche's answer for what we do next.
1:23.9	Do we not ourselves have to become gods merely to appear worthy of it?
