Summary

In September 1999, 17-year-old Nicole Sanchez was a talented singer with a contagious laugh and big dreams of becoming a veterinary assistant. But her life was brutally cut short by her 23-year-old boyfriend, Lionel Villarreal, in a horrifying act of intimate partner violence. After just four months of dating, Nicole had decided to end the controlling relationship. That weekend, she was shot and killed.

Lionel claimed it was a suicide, but the evidence told a different story. The single gunshot wound was a deliberate, humiliating act of aggression. He was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to what the court called "life," but in Michigan, that could mean parole in just 20 years. For over two decades, Nicole's family has lived with the devastating loss, while her killer has been planning his future.

This is the story of a vibrant young life stolen too soon and the relentless fight her sister has waged to keep a dangerous man behind bars and to ensure that Nicole's story is never forgotten.

everything you could have done to your hip without having it replaced. And so I'm sitting today

recording in a giant brace and just living life to the absolute fullest. Yes, I'm I'm living

0:41.0

my life max. And by that, I mean, I'm walking around on crutches and having other people help me

0:45.4

pull my pants up. But besides that, things are going well. Yeah, I was able to see you earlier this

0:51.9

past week. So I got to see you with your brace and you were actually

0:56.8

impressing me with how you were getting around very well. I was, I don't know why I always hear

1:01.8

hip surgery, which is very serious and it sounds serious and it is. But like I always am so

1:07.0

impressed with people who have hip things, hip surgeries, and you guys are like up and moving around,

1:13.5

like, so well. I don't know what I was picturing. They make you. It wasn't because of choice. I was on the

1:19.3

exercise bike with like no resistance less than a week after. So it's been, it's crazy. It's just like certain movements you can't do, which is why you have a brace. But yeah, I'm so glad to have that behind me. Cannot wait to do things like walk, just walk my neighborhood, which has been my goal the whole freaking time. And yeah, so I am doing really good. I'm on the other side of it. And that is a wonderful feeling. Yeah. So yeah. So we're here recording. It's been a while since we've recorded. We took a little

1:47.8

break so you could just focus on healing up. But yes. So this episode is going to be coming out on

1:55.0

Thanksgiving Day. Of course, as you guys know, if you listen to the show for a while, you know,

2:00.1

we don't normally

2:01.0

release an episode the week of Thanksgiving. It's always such a busy time. But we have been

2:06.2

releasing episodes on Thursdays all year this year. So we did want to share a special story.

2:11.9

The family really just wants to get the story out there and to share what happened to their loved

2:16.7

one. So today we'll be telling the story

2:19.0

of Nicole Sanchez. She's a young woman whose life was filled with light, creativity, and

2:24.9

plans for the future. But a single act of violence took all of it away. Nicole was born on April 22nd,

2:32.5
