This is the fifth episode of Queens of Crime at War, a six part series looking at what the best writers from the golden age of detective fiction did once that period came to an end with the start of the Second World War. Thanks to my guest, Gail Pittaway. You can find out more about her work here. There are no spoilers in this episode. This is another episode of Queens of Crime at War. A series looking at what the best writers

0:27.4

from the Golden Age of Detective fiction did once that period came to an end with the start

0:32.2

of the Second World War. If you haven't listened to any of the previous episodes,

0:37.3

you might want to go back and catch up after you've heard this one. So far I've covered

0:42.0

Agatha Christie, ECR Lorac, Marjorie Allingham and Josephine Tay. Today our subject is a writer

0:49.2

who had a very very long publishing career, almost the longest of any of the Queens of Crime I'm

0:54.5

talking about in this series. She stretched herself between two very different worlds,

1:01.0

the country of her birth, and the place where the Golden Age of Detective fiction was in full swing.

1:07.3

Her fiction pulls in these two directions too, which is in part what makes it so interesting.

1:14.4

And as the Second World War kept her grounded in her hometown for a long period,

1:19.3

those years informed what she would go on to write about her surroundings and her compatriots

1:24.2

for years to come. She is, of course, Naio Marsh.

The She-Dunic Pledge Drive has now met its goal. We've added over 100 new members to the She-Dunic

1:40.0

Book Club, and I'd like to say a huge thank you to those of you who have joined, donated,

1:44.4

and shared during this series. It will all greatly help me fund the podcast for another year.

1:50.9

Now that the goal is met, I'm afraid that the Buy One membership given other as a gift for

1:55.8

free offer is over for another year. It's been great to see so many people taking advantage

2:00.7

of that. However, you can still give any Book Club membership as a gift in the normal way,

2:06.0

if you want to, by visiting She-Dunic Book Club.com slash gift. That link will also be in the

2:11.6

episode description. And since the support has been so enthusiastic this year, I'm going to put

2:17.5

on a special Christmas livestream just for Book Club members on December 15th at 6pm UK time.

Lots of listeners got in touch to say that they enjoyed the episode with my husband guy a few
