Summary

The Nez Percé escape the Battle of Big Hole and move into Yellowstone National Park. Their options are limited and they choose a treacherous path over a mountain range to try to lose their army pursuers. 0:15.0	By August 11th, 1877, the day after the Battle of Big Hole, the Nez Perse had been running
0:21.4	and fighting the US Army for seven weeks.
0:24.8	The first engagement was the Battle of Whitebird Canyon on June 17th.
0:29.4	They were smaller fights in early July and then came the Battle of Clearwater on July 11th
0:34.6	and 12th.
0:36.2	After that tough loss, the Nez Perse went on the run.
0:40.2	The five bands who would not submit to life on a reservation fled east, crossed the bitter
0:45.3	root mountains in the central part of the Rocky Mountain Range, and moved down into Western
0:50.1	Montana.
0:51.9	About two weeks later, they were caught by Colonel John Gibbons' Army in a high mountain
0:56.7	valley.
0:58.1	The valley borders modern day Highway 43 outside the tiny town of Wisdom, Montana.
1:04.4	The Battle of Big Hole could probably be considered a draw.
1:08.5	Gibbons' force of fewer than 200 soldiers suffered pretty serious losses and so did the
1:13.4	Nez Perse, but neither side crushed the other so the war continued.
1:19.0	The Nez Perse had learned that their chances of living in peace in the land they called
1:23.0	Buffalo Country were far worse than expected.
1:26.8	They had hoped to find safety and help from their friends, the flathead people, but that
1:31.6	was the first sign of trouble.
1:34.0	The flathead nation was afraid to be associated with the Nez Perse and told them to keep moving.
1:40.2	Soon after, Gibbons' Army had attacked.
