0:06.8	Welcome back, everybody. First up, good news for anyone planning a California coast trip. Highway 1 through Big Sur has fully reopened at Regent's slide nearly three months earlier than expected.
0:20.1	Caltrans reopened the damage stress at noon on
0:22.5	January 14th, restoring continuous travel between Carmel and Cambria for the first time in
0:28.2	almost three years. The highway had been closed for a major landslide in February of last year,
0:33.9	overlapping with another slide further south that shut down through traffic for much of
0:38.2	2023 and 2024. For local businesses and residents, this is a huge deal. Many shops, campgrounds,
0:45.2	and tourism operators were only accessible from one side of the closure, cutting off drive-through
0:50.5	visitors, which are basically the lifeblood of the Big Sur economy.
0:54.9	Cal-Tran says crews were able to finish early thanks to some pretty advanced engineering.
0:59.0	They used remote-controlled bulldozers and excavators, drilled more than 4,600 steel reinforcement bars up to 60 feet deep into the hillside,
1:08.3	and even brought in specialized spider excavators that can work on extreme
1:12.5	slopes where normal equipment can't operate. In the final days before reopening, crews also had to
1:18.4	remove about 6,000 cubic yards of mud and debris after winter storms. That's roughly 240 dump trucks
1:25.5	worth of material just to get the road ready for traffic after they were already ready.
1:30.3	That said, Caltrans is warning that temporary closures are still possible during heavy winter storms,
1:35.3	and there could be short delays if crews need to clear debris or continue stabilization work along the cliffs.
1:41.7	The U.S. Geological Survey says this stretch of the coast is one of the most
1:45.4	landslide prone areas in the entire western U.S. with more than 1 500 mapped slides along about
1:51.5	75 miles of coastline. So the headline here is Highway 1 is open, Big Sur is fully connected again,
1:58.2	and coastal road trips are officially back on the table, but it's still a route
