Summary

The Ministry of Antiquities has announced a major discovery in the necropolis of Saqqara. A funerary temple, dating to the Old Kingdom (Dynasty 6) has come to light. Also, the Egyptian excavators have opened more than fifty burial shafts of the New Kingdom (Dynasties 18 and 19). The discovery is massive, and promises to add a lot to our understanding of life, burial, and religion in the ancient necropolis. Discovery announced January 16th, 2021. On January 16, 2021, the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities announced a major discovery.

This took place at the necropolis of Sakara, one of Egypt's oldest cemeteries, and a place of great historical significance.

Sakara is the site of many tombs covering thousands of years.

According to their press release, the Egyptian archaeological team can announce four significant discoveries.

Firstly, they report the discovery of a funerary temple belonging to Queen Niaret, the wife of King Teddy.

Secondly, there is the discovery of burial shafts, coffins and mummies dating from the New Kingdom, approximately

1300 B.C.E. Then there is the discovery of a 4-meter-long which contains chapter 17 of the book of the dead. Finally there is the discovery of statues, stelai, toys, wooden boats and funerary masks dating to the new kingdom.

to histories of the necropolis. In Antiquity, Sakara was the cemetery for the

Royal City of Memphis. Memphis, or Mennefer, was Egypt's administrative capital for approximately 2,000 years.
