Summary

Some suggest the tower was once an early colonial windmill, others believe maybe it was built by Vikings centuries before Columbus, or maybe it served a more esoteric function as both a solar calendar, or maybe even an ancient camera obscura.

0:07.8	times before, looking for haunts, pirates, other weirdness. Yeah, Newport has this undertone to it.
0:13.0	I mean, obviously everything is modern with cars and paved streets, telephone poles, things like that.
0:17.8	But there's also this very old seaport side that seems to bleed through
0:22.4	all the modern stuff. Yeah, I get it. Almost like a painting coming through, you know? So when you
0:27.4	stand here and look around, it's easy to imagine a time where like a horse-drawn carriage would go by
0:31.8	the docks and where a ship was waiting to sail you off to some distant land. Now what brings us to

0:41.1	We're looking for an ancient mystery today.
0:43.8	So let's cross the street here, Mill Street, and we're going to head over into Toro Park.
0:48.1	A Toro Park is a pretty spot on a slight hill in town.
0:51.5	From here, we can look west and see Newport Harbor below.
0:55.1	And what we've come to see is this stone tower here in the middle of the park, right behind
1:00.0	the wrought iron fence. It's ancient. Its original purpose is hotly debated, and it's preserved
