But despite the biting winter cold, rescueers are for a second night continuing their

desperate search for survivors after the two huge earthquakes on Monday.

So far, more than 7,000 deaths have been confirmed with thousands more people injured.

The World Health Organization says the chances of finding others alive are diminishing by the

minute because of the freezing conditions and the sheer number of people still trapped under the

rubble. The WHO spokesperson is Margaret Harris. At least 23 million people are exposed to the

effects of these earthquakes in both countries. And that's just a preliminary assessment.

We're mapping all the health facilities affected and the damage, their functionality.

And the information we're getting is that many, many hospitals just do not have what they need

to function to simple things like power, like fuel. And of course, we don't know the numbers

of health workers who've been affected. But what I can tell you is every health worker who

can help is out there helping right now. And it's not just health workers. Relatives of those

trapped under the collapsed buildings have joined in the frantic efforts using pickaxes,

crowbars or just their bare hands. Among those rescued in Syria was a newborn baby.
