Well, the Jets are on the road this weekend in Pittsburgh for a game against the Steelers. Kickoff time is scheduled for 820 Eastern Time Sunday night. It will be a Sunday night football game on NBC and streaming on Peacock. Today we're going to preview the game. The Jets are 2 and 4.

1:29.3

They are in desperate, desperate need of a win going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers team that's 4 and 2, but has their own changes. Of course, the Jets offense, we're going to see changes once again this week. It's clear that this New York Jets team does not really believe in continuity on the offensive side of the ball. And if you watch them the first four or five weeks of the season, that's probably a good thing.

2:20.1

Last week we saw Todd Downing take over as play caller for Nathaniel Hackett. And I think there were a lot of positive changes when we talked about the way the Jets approached that game offensively. Now look, I'm a big Todd Downing skeptic. I thought there was a chance he come out and do a really really good job the first game. The question is, can he sustain this? I think there were some good things, though. I like the use of the pistol formation. So you may have noticed that Aaron Rogers, when he went into the shotgun at points in the game Monday night against Buffalo, did not drop as deep. And he had a running back, typically, Breeze Paul lined up directly behind him. That's what's known as the pistol formation. So, you know, shotgun's when the quarterback's all the way back, pistol, the quarterback kind of goes halfway back and he still has a running back behind him. The advantage of shotgun is it allows the quarterback to scan the field pre-snap better than he can when he's under center. The advantage of being under center is that the running back when he takes a handoff is behind the quarterback.

2:34.4

So he gets a running start when he's under center. The advantage of being under center is that the running back when he takes a handoff is behind the quarterback, so he gets a running start and he's got momentum as he takes the handoff. The pistol kind of tries to combine the best of both worlds, where the quarterback drops, he drops back, but not quite as far. He can still scan the field to a degree, but the running back still behind him. So the running back can get momentum.

2:53.0

You could get that downhill running game working. And I think it worked very well for the New York Jets. It felt like they finally were able to unlock something in their run game. I also thought Downing did a better job. You know, getting Breece Hall involved on outside runs, as particularly a couple sweeps that Brice was able to break big runs on. But this week, we have a new challenge.

2:59.5

We have to integrate Devante Adams into this offense on the fly, which, you know, in some ways, is a nice problem to have.

3:02.6

DeMonte Adams, of course, is a star receiver, a very high-end receiver.

3:09.0

I think a lot of teams would love to have the problem of putting in a receiver with Devante Adams' talent in the middle of the season. You know, how do the Jets utilize him? Where does he line up? Now, I think that the

3:14.0

learning curve will not be great. First of all, even though Todd Downing is calling plays, this was a

3:20.4

system installed by Nathaniel Hackett. Of course, Hackett was Devantei Adams' offensive coordinator in Green Bay. Now, they were running Matt LaFloris system there, so it wasn't, you know, Hackett wasn't in charge. But I think we can presume lots of similarities. It's like system Rogers has been comfortable with, maybe to his own detriment. It's probably a system Adams will be comfortable with. And, you know, a lot lot of in the NFL, there's an old, there's an old cliche. Everybody's running the same stuff. And it's true. There are only so many different routes you can run. Devante Adams has run all of them anyway. The biggest issue, a lot of players will tell you when they're going into a new system is just the terminology, because one team may it may use this term for a play another team may use

3:58.7

that term and the fact that Adams has played with Hackett before suggests it's probably not going to be

4:03.6

that difficult to get him up to speed. The other thing that Adams is going to bring to the table is this

4:08.3

chemistry with Aaron Rogers. Now they haven't played a game together in close to three calendar years,

4:13.5

but you know, I get the sense that it's one of those things that's kind of going to kind of be like running a bike and riding a bike. You know, it comes back to you very quickly. And one area where Adams will certainly help, and it's an area where the Jets have really struggled with Rogers is when Rogers improvises. And, you know, we always think about playing, we always think about
