Summary

It’s Vic here, popping on just before my daughter’s school show to give you my top responses for when someone asks why you’re not drinking.

Now, you don’t have to explain yourself to anyone, your sobriety is yours alone, but every now and then some overly curious (or just plain annoying) person will give you a nudge and demand an answer.

So here are ten solid, funny, and totally valid responses to shut down the interrogation, change the subject, or make them laugh so hard they forget they asked.

Happy Saturday, y’all.

Welcome to Sober Awkward Top Tens, your weekly dose of 10 things you didn't ask for, but you definitely need.

0:11.0

It's a bit like therapy, but cheaper, less professional, and with probably a bit more chat about mine and Hamish's bodily functions.

0:19.5

Hamish and I will be taking turns delivering sober

0:22.0

truths, odd tips and life updates you never, ever knew you needed. So brace yourself. It's about to

0:30.0

get very awkward. Yep, it's sober awkward awkward, top 10 time.

0:38.4

Oh, I like saying that.

0:40.1

I've come on just because I'm about to go to my daughter's school play,

0:43.5

and I'm working backstage doing a bit of makeup.

0:45.9

But I was out last night getting some Thai food,

0:48.7

and somebody said about my AF beer that I was enjoying,

0:53.5

what's the point in that? And I get things like that all

0:57.7

the time. It is so bloody annoying. I wanted to say it's nice that alcoholics have an alternative

1:04.0

to poison, but I held back. And then I didn't actually talk to the bloke for the rest of the night

1:08.8

because I just thought, well, I can't be bothered to explain myself. So that situation has spurred me to come on here and record this.

1:16.2

I've got 10 minutes before I go, so we better get on with it. But people often ask me why I'm not

1:20.8

drinking when I'm out. And sometimes it's good to come up with a good response. Normally, I just say,

1:26.7

I used to drink, but after 25 years of falling over,

1:30.1

I realise there must be more to life. It either ends the conversation or starts it. What I'm pleased to

1:37.5

say is that most of the time, my response opens up a deep and very honest conversation about

1:43.9

alcohol consumption. Just being so

1:46.2

open about alcohol can be like opening a door for the person you're talking to. They may have

1:51.4

never actually even discussed their drinking before and it can free them from quite a lot of burden.
