| 0:55.6 | Until the liberalisation of the EU air transport sector in the early 1990s, air transport within the EU was a highly regulated industry and there was limited scope for competition. |
| 1:06.6 | But as restrictions on routes, prices or the number of flights were gradually removed, |
| 1:11.8 | the sector experienced an unprecedented boom in services. |
| 1:15.6 | Increasing competition led to a greater choice of destinations, airports and fares, |
| 1:20.9 | connecting more and more European cities and introducing a new concept in the sky, the low-cost carrier. |
| 1:28.0 | Indeed, low-cost airlines have largely profited from this liberalisation. |
| 1:32.3 | The Irish firm, Ryanair, has announced a 15% net profit margin for this fiscal year. |
| 1:37.8 | That's 66% more than the year before. |
| 1:40.6 | And profits are also rising for European airspace giants such as Airbus. |
| 1:45.1 | But the industry may well be falling victim to its own success. |
| 1:49.1 | As passengers are expected to double over the next 20 years, |
| 1:52.8 | European skies and airports are at a serious risk of saturation. |
