Summary

I am joined by Evan Lazar, senior reporter for Patriots.com to preview the New England Patriots for 2024.

Evan answers my questions at the following time stamps:

(02:47) More coach transparency at pressers without Belichick?

(04:15) Can we believe what the coaches are saying about players/news?

(05:23) How will the staff handle training camp and playing starters in preseason different?

(06:56) What is the Patriots offense going to look like?

(09:17) Is the scheme a better fit for Jacoby Brissett or Drake Maye?

(11:01) How many games will Drake Maye start in 2024?

(12:52) What chance does Drake Maye have to start Week 1?

(14:31) Will the defense fall off without Belichick?

(17:13) Is there any sense of “win now” or is this a full rebuild year?

Good morning, everybody, and welcome to team preview number one here on the Simple Handicap

0:04.7

Podcast feed. Today is Wednesday, July 17th, and we are looking at the New England Patriots

0:10.5

with the help of Evan Lazar of Patriots.com. Before we get into the interview, I just want to share a little

0:16.5

bit of my thought process to tell you a little bit about the perspective that I went into the interview

0:21.6

with and what I was trying to get answers around. The first thing that I'm looking at when it

0:26.3

comes to the paths is just trying to figure out what this coaching staff is going to be,

0:31.4

because this is a massive regime change. Gone are the days of Bill Belichick, and it is

0:37.0

completely new, top to bottom. So trying

0:39.2

to get a sense of that. Also trying to figure out, is this team trying to win now, or is this a

0:44.7

full rebuild year? This team is very clearly fourth place in the AFC East, arguably as fourth

0:51.8

place as any team in any division league-wide.

0:55.6

It's like, what are the expectations here for New England?

0:58.8

I also want to figure out the Jacoby Brissette, Drake May, breakdown, who's going to be

1:03.7

running the offense?

1:04.6

What is the offense going to look like with Van Pelt as the offensive coordinator?

1:09.0

And then finally, is this defense going to drop off? Is that

1:13.1

drop off inevitable when you lose the best defensive coach of all time? Or is there enough

1:18.0

talent on this roster? Because on paper, there are some big names on this defense. Is that

1:23.1

talent enough to keep this defense a top 10 unit? Or is this going to be a step back? And what I also

1:29.7

thought was very interesting at the end, kind of got into, is there a sense of tanking around

1:35.3

the New England Patriots this year? I think his answer might surprise people based on how the

1:40.2

pats are being discussed in mainstream media so far this summer.
