Summary

When a Harvard professor accidentally let Gypsy Moths loose in the 1860s, he didn’t realize he was releasing a scourge that would plague New England forests for more than a century. Nothing could stop the moths except a controversial method of wildlife management called biocontrol. It’s the scientific version of “fighting fire with fire”: eradicate an invasive species by introducing another invasive species. Since then, there have been lots of biocontrol success stories, but also a few disastrous failures. In this episode, we ask whether biocontrol is the best--maybe the only way--to combat invasives, or if it’s just an example of scientific hubris. Learn more about your ad choices. Well, I hope you're happy Bart. You have no idea what kind of plague you've unleashed

upon this town. The local bird club is horrified at first but then delighted when it turns out the

What happens when we're overrun by lizards?

I'll wipe out the lizards.

But aren't the snakes even worse?

0:50.5

Yes, but we're prepared for that.

We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.

0:55.5

But then we're stuck with gorillas.

0:57.0

No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorilla simply freeze to death.

1:02.0

This idea... the gorilla simply freeze to death.

1:16.0

This idea, intentionally bringing in a species from somewhere else to combat another species accidentally introduced from somewhere else, using nature to fight nature, it has a name.

1:17.7

It's called Biocontrol.

1:19.7

And you might have heard of some of the Biocontrol horror stories that this Simpson's episode is kind of hinting at.

Sugar cane farmers released mong goose in Hawaii hoping they would kill the rats that were infesting

their fields, but rats are nocturnal and mongese are not, and so instead they quickly

started eating all of Hawaii's native rare birds.
