Summary

The experiences you carry with you from your past greatly affect how you respond in the future. We are constantly feeding our brain data based on the world and circumstances we live in. Based on these experiences, our brain is able to formulate a ‘best guess’ and, thus, we form our responses. But are we really in control of our responses? Does our brain truly know anything or is everything our brain concludes merely just a ‘best guess’ and nothing more? On this episode of Conversations with Tom, Tom joins neuroscientist, psychologist, and author Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett to discuss such matters and more as they explore how the human brain develops it’s responses to the world and why it’s important for us to not only understand it for our own sake, but for the benefit of others as well. They discuss the difference between emotion and affect, how our brains develop during childhood, how culture is built into our brains, how concepts are formed and used within our brains, what our body budgets are, and why we should be always approach each other with empathy and compassion first. [1:49:10] QUOTES: “…there is no “just the cultural interpretation.” When your brain is making a prediction about what something means, that is a very sensory motor prediction, there is no culture laid on top.” [32:11] “When your brain is making a prediction, it’s using regularities from experience in your past. And if you live in a particular culture, your regulators are going to be really different than somebody in a different culture.” [46:14] “The important thing to understand is that every experience you have has the capacity to, even a little bit, change your brain’s function in the future.” [53:35] FOLLOW LISA: Website: lisafeldmanbarrett.com Twitter: twitter.com/LFeldmanBarrett

Hey everybody, welcome to another episode of Conversations with Tom.

I'm here with Lisa Feldman Barrett, the neuroscientist who's written multiple books that have been

0:11.2

really revolutionary in a way that I think about the brain and so I'm very excited to welcome

0:15.0

you to the show.

0:17.3

It's my pleasure to be here, Tom.

0:18.7

Thanks so much for having me on.

0:20.4

Absolutely.

0:21.4

Now this is going to be a lot of fun.

0:22.4

I was saying before we started rolling that you're, I have a working model of how the

0:27.6

brain works that has been tremendously useful to me in my life and your books come in and

0:33.8

just sort of knock that all around and say, you know, you're really thinking about this

0:37.6

in the wrong way.

0:38.6

And I wanted to start with a quote.

0:41.7

This isn't from your latest book, seven and a half lessons about the brain, but it really

0:47.0

gets to the heart of what I find so intriguing about the book.

0:51.0

And this is you talking in an interview.

0:52.6

You said, not all people in all cultures have emotions.

0:57.2

It really has affect, assuming they have a neurotypical brain, but they don't all have

1:02.0

emotions.

1:03.0

And I was like, say what I'd love for you to talk through the difference between an

1:08.8

emotion and an affect and how it is humanly possible that some people don't have quote

1:14.2
