Hey, you're listening to Unlimited Hangout. I'm your host, Whitney Webb. Today is going to be a bit of an unconventional episode. Since probably around November, I've been eager to unpack a rapidly growing effort to legislate, quote unquote, neuro rights, meaning neurological rights, at the national level in various countries and the global level through the UN.

0:22.5

I had originally planned to talk about this issue through an article,

0:26.6

but I obviously still haven't gotten around to that with everything else that has been going on in my life and in the world.

0:32.7

So I figured it would instead be a good subject for a podcast.

0:36.8

So when planning out this podcast, I was thinking of

0:39.2

who I could interview on this topic since usually the format of this podcast involves me

0:43.2

interviewing other people. But I haven't really seen anyone doing deep dives or really even talking

0:48.3

about this neuro rights legislation that's been popping up in a handful of countries and its

0:52.9

implications. So I realized I'd probably

0:55.2

have to do this one solo. However, unlike some of my colleagues, like Ryan from T-Lav or Robbie

1:00.7

Martin from Media Roots, who can do three-hour-plus shows solo, I prefer the conversational style

1:06.6

personally. So in this episode, instead of a regular guest, I will be joined today by my amazing

1:11.7

assistant and podcast editor, Star. So, hey, Star, how's it going? Welcome to the Unlimited Hangout

1:17.1

podcast. Thank you. It's nice to be here. Awesome. All right. So to start off, how did I first hear

1:26.3

about and get interested in this neuro rights phenomenon you may be asking?

1:30.8

Well, it turns out Chile, the long, skinny country in South America, where I've lived for eight years, is the testbed for this legislation and also for the neuro rights constitutional amendment.

1:41.1

But no Chilean actually wrote this legislation or this amendment, which have now since

1:45.4

passed, making Chile the first in the world to legislate neuro rights. Instead of these Chilean laws

1:51.1

being written by Chileans, it was instead written by Rafael Yuste, a Spanish-American neuroscientist, with

1:57.5

deep ties to Silicon Valley, one of Jeffrey Epstein's best science pals

2:03.0

and the U.S. government and military's brain mapping initiatives. Of course, that's not being

2:08.5

mentioned here in Chile and media, which instead is only happy to trumpet. We're the first,
