Summary

Our brains produce new brain cells throughout our entire lives through a process called neurogenesis, and in this podcast, Dr. Brant Cortright is going to share what this means for our brain health and how we can enhance the way our brains operate. Dr. Cortright is a clinical psychologist and Professor of Psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies, specializing in cutting-edge brain health and neuroscience-informed depth therapy.

When we increase the rate of neurogenesis, we see things like improved cognitive function, better memory, less stress, more energy and increased immune health. When we decrease the rate of neurogenesis, however, we see the opposite: poor cognition and memory, increased stress and anxiety and decreased immune health. In this interview, Dr. Cortright discusses the diet and lifestyle components — which mirror the ReWilding diet and lifestyle — that are crucial for your neural development. He shares some interesting information on sleep, and we also get into the effects of substances like caffeine, cannabis and mushrooms on brain health. Tune in for a fascinating discussion — rich with actionable information — that can help improve the functioning of your human animal!

Clearlight Sauna. I'm a huge believer in Sauna, in sweating, you know not just

1:00.9

Sauna's but sweat lodgesges anything like that that gets us to perspire when we're in a relaxed state so

1:07.7

Obviously I believe also in sweating from output in exercise, but it does a different thing to the body.

So we don't detoxify as readily when we're in a stimulated or sympathetic nervous system state,

1:22.3

but when we're relaxed like in a sauna or a sweat lodge and

1:25.3

we're sweating there, that's where we get that deep detoxification when we're

1:29.2

in a parasympathetic nervous system response. I was just down in North Carolina and I was around a lot of

agriculture. I'm not really used to that being up in New England. We don't have a lot of that

going on. So seeing these big ag fields cotton corn, canola, all of these kind of wheat, all of these crops that are being heavily sprayed and just thinking about how much

pesticide, how much herbicide, how much roundup ready is being used in places like that

and thinking that if you live in a place where there's a lot of big agriculture going on, you really want to consider looking at a sonna as part of your strategy for keeping that stuff out from bio-accumulating too much in the lipids of your body. So if you live in a

place where you think you're being inundated with agricultural chemicals, if not
