Look, everybody says that Volpe sucks as a hitter, and everybody agrees that somebody like

Vlad Guerrero is terrific. Let me give you some statistics. They both had about the same number

of a bats, about 400. Volpe has 22 doubles, Guerrero 23.

Volpe has 14 home runs.

Guerrero has 14 home runs.

Volpe has 55 RBIs.

Guerrero has 54, and their slugging percentage is not that far off.

Guerrero is better because he's got a better on-based percentage and some other things.

But if you take these statistics alone, and everybody agrees that Volpe should not be

swinging for the fences all the time, you have to conclude that Volpe is a relatively

productive hitter.

His statistics are very close to that of Guerrero, whom everybody agrees is a productive hitter.

So that's something to consider in deciding what to do with Volpe.

I really give you a lot of credit.

That was a great attempt.

That was basically pulling up Vlad,

who has not had the greatest year off of his big contract,

but clearly has had a better year than Anthony Volpe

and pulling the stats in which they're close in, like home runs and RBIs and doubles and saying, say, what are we complaining about? I give you a lot of credit in terms of creativity. But if we compare Anthony Volpe to other short stops around Major League Baseball, he's not as good. Like, where does he probably rank offensively amongst all short stops? Well, let's do a little test. Like, where does he rank in OPS amongst all short stops? And the answer is, like, the bottom half of the league. And then you throw in the fact that his defense just hasn't been great. And you throw in the fact that he hasn't fully developed as the player you expected him to be. And I think the result we get to is that he's been a disappointment. Now, is he being replaced right now? No. You know, I would play Ahmed Rosario a bunch over Anthony Volpe, not permanently, but I would. It doesn't sound like Aaron Boone's going to do that. And then next year, I would certainly look at upgrading the position.

But in terms of the right now, they do have to live with him. But arguing that, well, look at Vlad's numbers, they're not that far off, doesn't really feel like a very fair argument, to say

the least. No, there's too many other things that he's not doing really well right now.
