And the grief we are starting with this week, the grief we are talking about today is

neoliberalism, that is, putting profits before people. Of course, that is a gross oversimplification of what neoliberalism. That is, putting profits before people. Of course, that is a gross over simplification of what neoliberalism is. It's also a gross over simplification of what neoliberalism was. We will be taking a radical look at those origins when we consider the roots of neoliberalism, roots that reveal a lot about not only what

neoliberalism was, but what it has become. And yes, I did say neoliberalism five times in

those opening sentences, and now six, and that's likely more times than you will hear it uttered

in the media all week, month, and maybe even the entire

year, depending on what media you consume. That is because, despite its dominance in society

and culture, neoliberalism is something that you do not hear discussed that much in mainstream

establishment media, which is too bad because that can lead to a lot of misunderstandings

about what it is and what it is not,

including understandings that even misunderstandings that even I have.

It can also lead to a lot of people never having heard the term before,

despite its importance in our everyday lives.

Free market defenders and critics of socialism, like 20th century German philosophers and

political economists Frederick Hayek and Ludwig von Mezes, are two of the intelligentsia,

often cited in debates over neoliberalism and libertarianism.

However, like much about neoliberalism, they are also often misunderstood or misinterpreted.

It turns out there's a lot more to neoliberalism than the privatization and commodification

of, well, everything.
