Long, long ago in my country, but recent enough for me to remember, there were debates, presidential debates.

And the way these would work is you would have the two candidates that were running from our two major political parties.

We call them the Democrats and the Republicans and they each would have somebody who they nominated.

Then the two candidates would get up there and for sometimes two hours they would talk about

get this ideas they would discuss the country and how it was going and they would discuss different problems and

different proposed solutions to those problems and sometimes they would have a

little bit of a laugh with each other that shake hands before and after the debate and as a citizen as a voter you would come away feeling like okay well you know there's a lot of pressure there and that wasn't perfect but it was nice to hear two

people making their different cases for why their proposed ideas might work

better with some specifics mixed in there so that I could

evaluate that for myself. That is not how debates work now. We don't like

ideas aren't really the focus of those.

I don't really understand what debates are now,

but back in the day, this was the point.

And one of the questions that would always get asked in those debates was,

how are you going to pay for it?

This is an age-old question.
