Summary

After the Civil War, Buntline heads west to California in a short-lived effort to support the temperance movement. He makes new friends, and lots of enemies, and meets the scout who becomes the basis for his most successful literary creation. He permanently shapes the image of the American West when he turns a shy frontiersman named William Cody into a legendary celebrity called Buffalo Bill. 1:09.9	They'd all heard of Ned Buntline's fearful drinking.
1:12.9	It was at least partly responsible for his role in the 1849 Aster Place riot in New York,
1:19.9	where scores of people had been maimed or killed.
1:22.9	He'd been drinking heavily when he instigated the St. Louis riot in 1852,
1:27.9	and there were so many other instances that he routinely landed in a newspapers.
1:32.9	Until he was in California, sermonizing on the virtues of not drinking alcohol.
1:38.9	For a time, he practiced what he preached, but Ned Buntline was a thrill-seeker.
1:43.9	His antics in California earned him the wrath of the temperance party that it sponsored him.
