This week I'm talking to Krista Gorman about her book. I died and learned how to live.

Krista suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest and died while in labor with her daughter. During the eight minutes she was without a

detectable heartbeat, her consciousness transitioned into what we call the afterlife. She is an active

member of the International Association of Near Death Studies and has presented at their annual

I'm happy to be here.

Thank you for inviting me.

So we're going to be talking about your book.

I died and learned how to live.

And this is regarding your near-death experience.

So could you tell us, how did it start? My experience occurred in the year

2000 and I was in labor with my daughter and my labor was induced so that requires medication to actually start the contractions. And the

contractions are therefore normally abnormally strong. So it's this artificial contraction that's

occurring fairly regularly.

I had gone for about 15 hours without dilating enough to be able to start pushing,

you know, to actually deliver her.

And so there are risks involved with that.

And so the decision was made after her heart rate dropped to 60 on the monitor,

that's actually the cutoff for an emergency C-section because it indicates that the baby is in distress. So I knew when I had just graduated from my physician associate training program three weeks before this.
