On X this morning, I described this story as NBC issuing an apology to the mass shooter for misgendering.

The reason why I did is because I am at a crossroads on what this story really means.

Now, of course, the headline for those that are just tuning in is NBC issues correction after using the wrong pronoun for mass shooter.

Quote, she used female pronouns.

And I wanted to highlight that.

I wanted to say, wow, the corporate press is issued a, that's not a correction.

You can call it on the surface a correction because it is the functional form of what a news

organization does when they believe they have an error. However, it is in fact the inverse of a

correction because putting false information into a story is not correcting anything. Just because

someone says their name is a thing doesn't mean you call them by the wrong

name.

Imagine there was a serial killer named John Doe.

We'll just go with John Doe so that nobody accidentally gets accused of being a serial

killer.

And after this person is caught, the news says, well, John Doe actually went by Rick.

So we're changing the articles to say his name is Rick.

It was, it's not his name.

You wouldn't do that.

It's never been done.

So it's not a correction.

So why are they doing it?

Why would NBC issue a quote-unquote fake correction? Because it is,
